The leadership board of the iconic performing arts venue has approved a measure to change its name the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to a statement from the White House.
White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt declared online that the board's vote was unified, crediting "the extraordinary job President Trump has done over the last year in rescuing the building."
"This promises to be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt reach new levels of success and grandeur," Leavitt continued.
The intended name change is expected to be highly controversial, notably in Washington, D.C., where the center has served as an iconic landmark since its founding and christening for President John F. Kennedy.
Background of the Institution
Soon after taking office, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's incumbent trustees and appointed loyalists in their place. The freshly appointed board subsequently voted to appoint Trump as chairman.
The president helped procure approximately $257 million in appropriated money to pay for extensive repairs and operational expenses at the aging venue.
Original Concept
The concept for a Washington-based performing arts center originated in the 1950s. Following the murder of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, in 1963, the future venue was named in his honor.
