Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
